So, now that we've discussed the benefits, uses, and criticisms of social media. It's time to look at how we could reduce these adverse effects.
Regulation And Government Intervention
When discussing ways in which regulation can be used to reduce the adverse effects of social media; Government Intervention could be used in the forms of Legislation or regulatory agencies in order to help regulate Social media.
An example of the government using legislation is the Online Safety Act, 2023. this was the governments way to help make social media safe for everyone, especially children. It requires social media sites to take action against certain aspects of their site including: Harm reduction, Child safety, Reporting mechanisms, etc.
An example of a regulatory agency for social media is OfCom. OfCom is the overall regulative body for online safety in the UK. They make sure that companies that they regulate follow their rules. these include: social media services, online marketplaces, discussion forums, etc.
Individual Intervention
Now we can't just expect the government to do everything for us, we must also help stop the adverse effects of social media. Some examples of how we can help is:
Limit usage and setting daily limits - this will help you become and therefore experience less of the negatives that come with addiction to your phone. This will also help you make room for more time to spend on other, more productive things.
Be more respectful online - try not to be so hate fuelled all the time and just use social media as a fun tool to be you. Don't spend all your time on social media constantly looking at negative things and spreading this negativity to others.
So, now you know about the uses and benefits of social media, but also the criticisms. And you now know what the government and yourself can do to help combat these adverse effects.
I hope this has been beneficial to you to have as much fun as you possibly can on social media.
